Record Grain Shipments by Rail Achieved with New Wagons
LTG Cargo, the rail freight company of the LTG Group, set a new record in August by transporting 560,000 tons of this year’s grain harvest.
“This season has been described by Lithuanian grain growers as particularly challenging. A delayed harvest means the abundant crop must be gathered and transported swiftly to preserve grain quality and support timely sowing for the next season. In response, LTG Cargo has prepared approximately 1,600 wagons for this year’s grain transport – 33% more than last year. Thanks to the increased capacity and new grain carriers, we were able to move record volumes of agricultural products in a short timeframe,” says Eglė Šimė, Head of LTG Cargo.
Eglė Šimė highlights that the 500 new high-capacity wagons acquired last year have significantly enhanced the company’s ability to meet customer demands. Grain growers and processors lease this specialized rolling stock to ensure efficient transportation.
LTG Cargo plans to transport a total of 3.3 million tons of various grains by the end of the year, including rye, wheat, barley, and rapeseed. Last year, grain shipments accounted for roughly 16% of all cargo transported by rail. In July 2023, LTG Cargo moved around 270,000 tons of grain, reaching a peak of about 460,000 tons in August. This August, despite the grain season starting a month later than usual, shipments surpassed last year’s figure by 22%.
In addition to grain wagons, LTG Cargo has invested in 200 new semi-wagons designed for transporting crushed stone and other bulk materials resistant to atmospheric exposure. These new wagons will enable an additional 700,000 tons of cargo to be transported, supporting key infrastructure projects such as the Rail Baltica European gauge railway.
LTG Cargo, a member of the LTG Group, continues its active expansion and integration efforts in Western Europe. The company offers a comprehensive range of services, including freight transport, intermodal solutions, logistics and forwarding, cargo loading, as well as locomotive and wagon repair and rental, both in Lithuania and internationally. LTG Cargo also manages subsidiaries LTG Cargo Polska in Poland and LTG Cargo Ukraine in Ukraine.
