LTG Cargo Polska transports outsized cargo from Ukraine to Lithuania

The Ukrainian company LLC TAS Dniprovagonmash has chosen LTG Cargo Polska, the Polish subsidiary of LTG Cargo, the LTG Group's rail freight transport company, to transport a special outsized cargo, i.e. gondola cars specially manufactured for the transport of crushed stone and bulk products in Lithuania.

“LTG Cargo has purchased a total of 200 new gondolas, 40 of which have already arrived in Kaunas from Ukraine by rail. We estimate that these rolling stock will enable LTG Cargo's customers to transport an additional 700,000 tonnes of crushed stone, which is needed not only for road construction and repair works, but also for strategic projects such as the construction of the Rail Baltica European railway line," says Eglė Šimė, the head of the Lithuanian rail freight transport company LTG Cargo.

LTG Cargo Polska offered the Ukrainian wagon manufacturer, which was responsible for arranging the delivery of the gondolas to Lithuania, a full service package including not only transit services through Poland, but also the replacement of bogies.

"Transporting this outsized cargo was not without its challenges, for which we found solutions. As these gondola cars are intended for transporting freight on the broad gauge railway in Lithuania, in order to be able to transit through Poland on the European gauge, we have specially coordinated the transport with the infrastructure manager and obtained the relevant permits with special conditions of carriage," says Laimonas Nekrošius, President of LTG Cargo Polska.

During the transport of the rolling stock from Ukraine to Lithuania, the bogies of the wagons were changed twice due to the different gauge: once in Poland, after the arrival of the gondola cars from Ukraine and the transfer of the rolling stock from the wide gauge (1520 mm) to the European gauge (1435 mm), and the second time in Šeštokai, Lithuania.

LTG Cargo Polska plans to organise the transport of 100 more of these gondolas in the near future. According to Mr Nekrošius, the transport of this cargo required special care, so the fact that the transport of the gondolas was carried out smoothly, qualitatively and expeditiously demonstrates the ability of LTG Cargo Polska to offer the transport of oversized cargoes on the market.

LTG Cargo Polska is a subsidiary of LTG Cargo, which started operations in Poland in 2020 with the aim of strengthening logistics supply chains and improving freight mobility between Lithuania and Poland and Western Europe.
