Green Kilometre Calculator

The Green Kilometre Calculator is LTG Cargo's sustainability initiative to encourage customers to choose greener logistics or intermodal transport.
The biggest win of intermodal transport is the environmental benefits and the reduction of the negative environmental impact of heavy-duty vehicles by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
LTG Cargo has developed the Green Kilometre Calculator in response to the demand from customers and partners to calculate the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emission savings of intermodal rail freight. To reveal and measure our customers' contribution to environmental sustainability, we have developed a methodology that records CO₂e savings of intermodal freight.

Methodology for recording CO₂e savings of intermodal freight
In order to reveal and measure our customers' contribution to environmental sustainability, we have developed a methodology to record CO₂e savings of intermodal freight in 2022 (the Intermodal Freight GHG Emissions Assessment Methodology), which was updated in 2024 due to the change of the standard from LTS EN 16258:2013 (repealed) to LST EN 14083:2023. Emissions from rail transport are calculated on the basis of actual diesel fuel consumption, with updated factors. The coefficient for road transport was chosen according to the dominant type of tractor vehicles in Europe, taking into account the characteristics provided (previously, a general coefficient was applied to road vehicles without considering the characteristics of heavy-duty vehicles carrying intermodal freight). The calculations based on the updated methodology are much closer to Ecotransit, Europe's most widely used and recognised CO₂e calculator.
Intermodal transport – a global solution
The European Commission aims to have 30% of goods transported more than 300 kilometres by rail or water by 2030 and 50% by 2050. Achieving these targets could lead to estimated total economic benefits of up to EUR 100 billion. The partial transfer of freight from road to rail (for long distances) is in line with the European Union's Shift2Rail policy and contributes to the Green Deal's objectives to reduce CO₂e emissions from transport.
Green Kilometre Certificates
Every year, we issue Green Kilometre Certificates to our customers who save CO₂e emissions. LTG Cargo has saved 163 873 tonnes of CO₂e in 2022-2024, compared to emissions from road transport for intermodal transport. In total, more than 400 of our customers have received Green Kilometre Certificates.
