Kaunas–Duisburg Intermodal Corridor: A Strategic Link for Baltic Exporters
As sustainability, supply chain resilience, and transport diversification become increasingly important in global logistics, the significance of Duisburg, one of Europe's key logistics hubs, continues to grow. The intermodal route operated by LTG Cargo, the freight transportation company of the LTG Group, between Kaunas and this logistics gateway in western Germany is becoming not only an alternative to road transport but also a strategic connection for exporters across the Baltic States.
A natural gateway for the Baltic region
The Port of Duisburg is the world's largest inland port and one of Europe's most important freight concentration points. The city is located in the Rhine-Ruhr economic region, considered Europe's largest industrial and consumer market. The port's infrastructure includes ten terminals, trimodal connections linking rail, road and inland waterway transport, and more than 400 regular intermodal train services per week to over 100 destinations across Europe and beyond.
"This concentration provides businesses with a significant advantage: Europe's main logistics corridors converge in one location, allowing cargo to be rapidly distributed to the Benelux countries, France, Italy, and other regions of Germany. In addition, Duisburg remains a key hub for freight moving between North Sea ports and inland European markets," says Dalia Čiutaitė-Antanaitė, Head of International Business Development at LTG Cargo.
Thanks to the European-gauge railway line, the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal is one of the most important logistics hubs in the Baltic region. Its direct connection to Duisburg enables Lithuanian businesses to access Europe's largest consumer and industrial market without additional transshipment. This route is particularly relevant for the industrial, chemical, FMCG, and retail sectors. Once cargo reaches Duisburg, it can be efficiently routed to numerous logistics centres across Europe, not only via road transport through last-mile delivery solutions, but also through an extensive network of rail connections and terminals.
LTG Cargo: The route must be strengthened
According to LTG Cargo, the Kaunas-Duisburg connection has all the prerequisites to become one of the most important intermodal corridors in the Baltic States.
"Duisburg is not only Germany's logistics gateway but also one of Europe's key logistics entry points. For exporters in our region, it provides access to a vast market through a single route and enables efficient integration into European supply chains," says the Head of International Business Development at LTG Cargo.
According to D. Čiutaitė-Antanaitė, intermodal transport is no longer merely a sustainability initiative.
"Businesses are looking not only for lower emissions but also for greater reliability in their supply chains. Rail transport reduces dependence on road transport restrictions, driver shortages, and traffic disruptions. The Kaunas-Duisburg route offers precisely this combination of stability and efficiency," she adds.
According to the LTG Cargo representative, strengthening the route should involve increasing service frequency as well as expanding cooperation with Western European terminals and logistics partners. A major boost to the route's development has also come from the certification obtained by LTG Cargo Polska, LTG Cargo's subsidiary in Poland, which allows the company to independently operate freight services within Germany. LTG Cargo Polska transports freight on this route from the Lithuanian-Polish border onwards.
Outlook for the future
The European Union's commitment to promoting more sustainable transport, investments in intermodal terminals, and businesses' growing focus on supply chain resilience are creating favourable conditions for the growth of rail freight transportation.
According to D. Čiutaitė-Antanaitė, Duisburg continues to invest in infrastructure, terminal expansion, and digitalisation in order to maintain its position as one of Europe's leading logistics hubs.
As a result, LTG Cargo's intermodal route between Kaunas and Duisburg has the potential to become not only an efficient logistics service but also a strategic corridor that strengthens the competitiveness of Lithuanian businesses in Western European markets. Such connections enable the Baltic region to remain an active part of European supply chains while providing Lithuanian exporters with greater flexibility, reliability, and growth opportunities.
